WOMEN’S HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST. Tallahassee, FL (February 6, 2020) — The Florida Commission on the Status of Women (FCSW) honored the winners of its 6th annual Women’s History Essay Contest today during a celebration luncheon on the 22 nd floor of the Florida Capitol as part of the annual LEAD Summit. In 2020 the Essay Contest will connect Jane Austen’s novels to her Juvenilia. The latter are short pieces she wrote as a young teenager—brief stories, plays, and chapters of novels. Many of the works are laugh-out-loud funny and feature memorably naughty young ladies who have inspired this year’s essay topic: female “villains” in Austen’s novels.
Students are also encouraged to enter the 2019-2020 Metra Safety Essay Contest. Contest participants are asked to describe in 300 words or less why you should “Obey the Signs” when near railroad tracks, platforms and crossings. Students will compete in three divisions: Elementary, Middle and High School. First-place winners in each division of the essay contest will also receive an iPad.
